Trash and Recycling

Monday is Volker’s trash and recycling day. Make sure to place bags and bins at the curb by 7:00 AM, and no earlier than 3:00 PM on Sunday. Curbside trash and recycling is available for all single family houses and apartments/condos with fewer than seven units.

The City’s Solid Waste web site has all the details and rules for trash, recycling, bulky items, yard waste, and household hazardous waste. https://www.kcmo.gov/city-hall/departments/trash

Bulky items are collected for free but by appointment only. To schedule visit  https://www.kcmo.gov/city-hall/trash/bulky. Bulky items are anything that won’t fit in regular trash bags, e.g. furniture, appliances, etc.

Garbage - The city takes two trash bags and unlimited recycling. Extra trash bags require red trash tags, available for $2 each at Westlake Ace Hardware at the corner of Westport Road and SW Trafficway. Extra or replacement recycling bins are also available for $10 at Westlake.

Curbside Recycling - The city provides curbside recycling to residents. Please be mindful to place only allowed recycling materials in your bin as the added work to remove non-recyclable materials can be very troublesome, e.g. do not put glass bottles or plastic bags in your bin. Recycling FAQ page: https://www.kcmo.gov/city-hall/trash/recycling/faq

Glass recycling – Glass is NOT allowed in the curbside recycling bins. Ripple Glass provides free glass recycling at several locations around the city. The closest glass bin is on the KU Med campus behind the A.R. Dykes Library – on 39th Street two blocks west of State Line Road.  Additional bins are located at Sunfresh, the Midtown Home Depot, and at 51st and Main. www.rippleglass.com

Yard Waste is collected at the curb, once in the spring and once in the fall. Drop-off sites are available year-round.  https://www.kcmo.gov/city-hall/trash/leafandbrush

Apartment/Condo recycling – If your building has more than six units and does not provide on-site recycling, the city has two drop-off recycling centers. https://www.kcmo.gov/city-hall/departments/trash/recycling/drop-off-centers
